I'm pretty happy with APMEX, so when it advertised ... "1840-1873 Liberty Seated dollar, VG" ... for $300, I took the plunge. I was disappointed when I received this, which looks cleaned to me: On the other hand, 1860-O might be a better date than expected. If I had to grade it, I might say "F12 Details". Thoughts? Definitely cleaned. They should be embarrassed.

Moral of the Story, don't buy coin "from stock" with the "we pick the coin" disclaimer.

Yes, definitely cleaned. Perhaps F details, but a problem-free G or VG would be more desirable.

APMEX is not a coin dealer. They are a bullion dealer. Bullion stackers do not care if it has been harshly cleaned.

I'd want to hand pick a Seated dollar for that kind of money. I'd send it back if you can, I am not dead set against cleaned coins in all cases but this one has had a pretty harsh one.

I agree. I know my no-motto Seated dollar has been cleaned at some point in her life, but I bought it at a coin show knowing exactly what I was getting.

Ouch! I love the history of these and finally got one after years of wanting one. But I agree with how badly this has been cleaned you should look for another.

Cleaned, VG-8 sharpness. Net grade would be lower. 1860 O is not a better date, it is one of the more common ones and along with 1859 O the most common in MS as at least three possibly four bags of MS coins of the the two dates came out of the Treasury holdings in 1962

Dang, this Liberty had a rough life Those 'sight-unseen' offers always scared me, especially if it isn't straight-grade slabbed... at least then you'd know it is problem free even if it's ugly

Lotsa feathers on that bird. Overall, I think that F-12 details is fair to say. There are no heavy marks or dings, either. A great many of the lower grade LSD's seem to have been cleaned. I've gotten a few good deals from APMEX; this, based on the fact that they're more of a clearinghouse, lacking the skills of a learned numismatist. As such, given the quantity of coins that passes through their hands, they can be cherry-picked.

It's going back. They won't fuss about it. In eight years or so this will be my fourth return, I think. APMEX does supply limited numismatic grade stuff, and it is pretty accessible and reasonably priced. I've actually had some good experiences with APMEX. Here's what came with the cleaned dollar: I'm happy with that one. I've also had great luck with their uncertified random date coins. Sent me a "random date" 1935 BU Walking Liberty half that NGC graded out at MS66. Pretty nice gold specimens, too. I've bought a zillion random date Morgans of various grades, including a nice 1902-s that PCGS graded at VG-10, and an 1896-P that earned MS64+ from PCGS.

Sounds like the need to return an unsatisfying coin is a small price to pay when most of your purchases are pleasing. The quarter looks like a good one and an MS-66 1935 Walker is a great result from a generic buy. Congrats!

Even though it's cleaned, it's still a very beautiful coin mate ;).
