Any opinions as to a small or large 99 variety? Just for fun Ofcourse as there isn't a large difference in price.

For this year, there is large 9's, and hooked 9's, and there is a big difference in price, with the hooked 9's being the much more valuable, with that being said you have the more common large 9's..

Thank you for your reply! I'm aware of the hooked 9 more just trying to clarify between the others. I figured it was a large too!

As SilverWolf said there is only hook 99 and large 99 varieties. There is no small 99. Its the 96 that has a small and large 96.

Nice coin. Cheers.

Hmm, I'm once again confused as to why coins canada and the saskatoon varities both make reference to a small 99?

You're confused because they are confused.
At one time ICCS certified small 9 varieties, until it was discovered they were actually no different from large 9's.
Small 9's are no longer listed in Charlton's or Trends.

Well the Charleton only lists the Hook 99 and the Large 99, however there are other varieties. Let me help clear this up for you.

Barry Borseliino's work states there are two small 99 variations, the first of which is the Type II (a) small 9's with DOT and I quote "In this case, it is also true because this particular Small "99" variation, has a tiny "Dot" which can be found on the Obverse of these coins, between the Letters "N" and "D" (near the Bottom) in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND"!'

The other small 99 variety, which he terms 'Type II (b), small 9's has a low repunched second 9 and no Dot.

The one you have shown is the latter.

Cheers

Wow you guys are really smart! So much amazing information and I appreciate it all very much! I use Coins Canada mainly for now until I can eventually get a Charlton book.
