Some addl. data for this coin:

10.5 mm (0.41") diam.

Per my scale the measured weight does equal the coin's 1/4 g desigation as shown.

I am not familiar with fractional California gold.
If it were mine.
I would sent it to the best reputation TPGrader for authentication for these, and hope that I haven't wasted my fees.

Many Jewelers copies in good gold have been made of these.

I'm not familiar with these at all. I would check it with a magnet and get a weight on it. photos not that great. AU58 or MS62. one thing that bothers me are the little dots on the reverse under CALIF and GOLD. if these are raised then most likely its a fake (cast)

Does it matter insofar as the classification of the authenticity of the coin? It is very hard to see if they are incuse or relief. I ran a porcuppine quil over them but could not make that determination.

I used a high power scope and did observe, however, that the letters do have microdots of this same feature all over the top of them; the above still applies to these.

I did recheck the weight and it is the same as the subject line states above. No matter the true method of manufacture, if the weight coincides with documented figures, wouldn't be unlikely that tungsten, for example, would be used to simulate gold on something so small?

if they are relief then yes. at minimum it sends up a red flag of possible casting and gold plating or some other method. I'm not saying this is the case but that along with the odd blotchy look should be of some concern. if you believe its genuine then I would consider getting it graded.

The heavy blotchy toning suggests to me that it might not be gold. It looks like it might be one of these tokens.

I would tend to agree that it is 'possibly' this one:
