Florida is a tougher state for Obsolete notes; I am puzzled by the additional VERT sigs. If anyone has any info, let me know:) PMG opted not to comment?

Beautiful 1863 State of Florida $3 Obsolete with the red overprint. My understanding of the two sets of signatures is that the two bottom signatures were secretarial, and the vertical/diagonal signatures were the actual signers. If you look closely you'll see that the upper left signature matches the handwriting of the lower left and the upper right signature matches the lower right signature. The upper signatures are the people that signed the lower signatures. Hope that helps.

Steve's explanation seems reasonable, but why would they bother to sign? To me the signatures on the right hand side don't seem to be from the same hand. Nice note, and interesting question from the OP. Are there any notes from PMG on the back of the holder or writings on the note itself? I'm going to take a guess that the top signatures are from people that were famous at the time for lack of another explanation.

When I was my father's caregiver (Alzheimer's) and had Power of Attorney over his estate, I was often asked to sign his name and then my name below his. The signatures at the bottom (Austin/Milton) were definitely the important people of the day.
