Came across this Texas State Quarter the other day and noticed that it is unusually dark on BOTH sides and has an unusual luster. I figured that it was just weathered or had been buried or something simple to explain... but it still has this unusual dark shade to it.

Is this something anyone can explain or has seen before?

A friend of mine said something about a possible annealing error? He said that this may be worth some serious money if it is a rare or highly unusual coin. Figured I would consult you folks as I am still new to the collection scene.

Any help or infomation would be much appreciated. Let me know if anyone has any questions or needs additional pictures or information.

Hi and

It looks to me like environmental damage. I've sometimes found cupro-nickel coins on the beach and they've been tarnished dark brown. If I try to clean them up a bit to make them acceptable for spending, they often end up this pinkish color. The parallel scratches look as if someone's tried to clean it with a wire brush.

Yes, the result of being exposed to environmental agents. Does look like an attempt was made to clean the coin. Keep it as a fun example.
