Hello. I found this penny today while roll hunting. I had submitted some photos in the past to learn they were lamination errors as opposed to a crack. If I understood you guys correctly, a crack should show as raised on the coin correct? I think that is what I got here. Please let me know. Also, the mint mark is touching the date. That alone would make this penny a keeper right? Thank you all in advance for your time.
Me I thing: if a coin is struck at 40-50 tones and on die we have a small same material wire or something like, the strike will make a cold high pressure molding, resulting in transfer of this material from die to the coin. According to metallurgical studied just 10 tone strike is enough to make cold molding on copper base alloys.
That die crack is characteristic of a retained interior die break--had that portion of the die broken off (being on the rim), you'd have a nice Cud. Mint marks back then were placed by hand so locations will vary. The '53 S is known for having different mint mark locations, including the one which appears to touch the date. I have dozens and dozens of these--no additional value as they are not uncommon.
Nice "PreCud" find - Here's the " Cuds on Coins" website page with the definition of PreCud and a list of coins where you can look up 53-S coins with conditions like yours.
Whoo hoo! Two keepers within 24 hrs! Thank you all for taking the time to look and reply. Hopefully I will continue to find keepers. If I had to put my money on it tho... spenders all the way. I am kidding. I will do my best to not waste all of your time. Smiles, Linda
