This silver peso coin of the Spanish Colonial Philippines was only issued in 1897 and is rather similar to Spanish 5 Peseta coins from the same period. All in all I consider this a really interesting coin! Image: obv.jpg102.28 KB Image: rev.jpg84.19 KB

That has to be the youngest looking Monarch I have ever seen on a coin. And that reverse is one of my favourite designs, so much history and ties to so many countries.

There were 6,000,000 coins minted for this particular coin. this coin circulated even during the american regime before the first US Philippines coins were minted in 1903. There are coins minted of Alfonso XIII when he was a baby. He was born a King. I think he is the only monarch with 6 (not so sure) different ages minted in coins.

Wow! He is young.
This would be an interesting forum topic: People under 21 minted on coins.

in 1892 Spain issued a 50 centimos, peseta, 2 pesetas and 5 pesetas with the childhead of the Spanish king
in 2004 in the Netherlands princess Amalia, firstborn of Willem-Alexander of Orange-Nassau and Maxima Zorreguita gets her first coin of silver of 5 euro, km 248. It was taken from a baby-picture, then a few months old. That is the youngest I believe so, because as Willem-Alexander dies, she will be crowned Queen.
Great Grandmother Wilhelmina was 12 years old when daddy William III died in 1892; her portrait is featured at 10 cents, 25 cents and guilders of holland 1892-1897.

True indeed it is a very interesting silver coin. And based on records this 1897 Alfonso XIII is the FIRST and LAST One peso silver coin of the Philippines bearing the name Islas Filipinas. One year after its 1897 mintage, Spanish rule in the Philippine Islands officially ended with the 1898 Treaty of Paris, wherein Spain ceded the Philippines and other territories to the United States. Thus making this Un Peso circulation shortlived with full historic background.

That's a nice coin. I think the detail of the coat-of-arms on the back is a great feature.

In replying to a thread, there are icons above - pick 2nd to the last : to insert quote. afterwards copy and paste (the one you will want to quote) it in between the quote-quote. Then you may check it on preview and enjoy to the community Carlos Do you also collect coins with same one as Archraz originally posted on this thread?

Hi Archraz:
Interesting coin, specially the toning. Do you have any theories how the coin ended with dark toning in the reserved areas and almost wiped clean in the high points.
I have seen these in many french silver coins, where the face of the monarch is almost polished white dull, and it has dark toning elsewhere in the coin?
