How does a coin gets toned dark like this? Picture is a bit too bright to see the toning fully as it's darker in person. Insights appreciated!

No unusual for a silver coin to tarnish like this when left along for some time - just like your grandmother's silver flatware.

I had really only seen uniform dark tone so I was unsure if PMD could be reasoning. Thanks for welcome!

Environmentally-caused toning/tarnishing can manifest itself in different ways of the surfaces of a coin--from partial to full.

it's normal for silver to tone like this.

This is the original idea behind photographic film and paper. Light exposure changes the color of the silver used in the emulsion and creates a negative image when it's processed.
