I have a 1974 quarter thats a large bead and a 1989 small bead normal or?

There is no official designation of 25 cents as Small/Large beads. The obverse had major re-design in 1979, so you cannot compare 1974 and 1989 coins.
Also, only different coins from the same year count as a variety.
The bead size is most likely an effect of strong/weak strike. Photos please.

Different years, different dies.
With the design change in 1980, they changed the beads.
