So I was over at the APMEX site, toying with a small (to most of you no doubt!) potential purchase when all of a sudden I noticed a message on the main page in red:

We are experiencing a 1-3 day delay in shipping and only accepting orders over $149 due to high order volume

I just tried to "check out" and the message appeared again, and I couldn't continue with my order.

Now, I am new to all of this stuff, but it seems to me that with silver down the last few days, this is a hassle for people on a budget who want to purchase Eagles right now. Are small orders just not "cost effective"? Many small orders add up to $...

Curious what more experienced folks here think.

Most of the bullion houses went to $299 minimums earlier this year.

APMEX JUST today lowered theirs from $299 to $149.
Use to be $99. Guess we will see if it gets back to that level.

Silver isn't down, only spot price is, of which I don't pay much attention too. I do believe you are on to something with 'cost effect'.

Well, I was going by the actual trading price (as shown along with stock prices, shown in green/red as it moves)... isn't that "spot"? What am I missing?

Spot price is the manipulated 'paper' price of silver. Lately, physical silver is trading much higher than spot due to supply and demand. Physical premiums over spot price can vary wildly, lately anywhere between 10-50% or more per ounce.

FYI- For kicks I sent them an email asking about the minimum and if it was going to be around a while. They told me they were planning to remove it this week, and sure enough, they DID! I was actually rather impressed that I got a personal reply not long after sending the email! :-)
