Hi, I am expanding my interest to include tokens- especially those from New York. any experienced civil war token collectors that have dealer or websites they suggest for token purchases? I have found some nice purchases on ebay as well as Heritage Auction but maybe you have ideas? Also any suggested token reference books are appreciated? Thanks

I love Civil War tokens, and I've been collecting them for about 10 years (see my avatar). I recommend A Guide Book of Civil War Tokens ("The Official Red Book"), by Whitman/Bowers.

Steve Hayden has regular sales on ebay as well so there is a constant flow of tokens and exonumia from him. His catalog sales are some of the best around imo. You might also consider joining http://cwtsociety.com/ which would introduce you to both dealers and others interested in civil war tokens as it is a club that specializes in the area.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I ordered that Red Book and also joined the civil war token society- both great suggestions. I also checked out that auction site which has a Great selection of top quality tokens. So far I have been buying mostly raw tokens that just strike me as interesting but need to learn more as I expand my purchases. Tokens are a really interesting offshoot of my coins interest and I knew little about them. Pretty fascinating and many have interesting local geographic connections for me. Thanks all

Subscribe to Hayden's listings. He's the man. Also, you can see him at a few shows. IMHO, shows are your best bet for obtaining CWT's. Here's a brass 127/248 that I recently bought at the Chattanooga show for $25. The dealer had over 50 assorted CWT's, your pick, at $18 apiece. They graded F-AU. I told him that another dealer on the floor was paying $19 each, but he didn't seem interested; this, being more inclined to sell them to collectors. @BGLI .... A former NY'er, myself, I've long collected NY CWT's in particular. There are many great pictorials from across the state, but what I like most is that there are so many NY merchant scrip-mates. I refurbished an old silverware chest to house my NY collection. The tray contains one each from the 25 NY towns. Underneath are the scrip-mates, fractional currency, along with many favored NY tokens. I love revisiting this chest ....
