This is my first time trying to post pictures so I hope this turns out OK. This is a 1876s Trade dollar that had been sitting in my collection for over 30 years until I just discovered it was counterfeit. Coin was .45 grams under weight and I graded this coin XF. Upon close examination the obverse and reverse were covered in raised die polish lines and numerous "Pimples". A specific gravity test resulted in a reading of 8.74 which is more consistent with copper. Funny thing is that it passed the ping test and sounded like silver. Confident of my test results, I filed the reeded edge to reveal a copper or brass core.

Coinfrog, I am sorry, I tried to enlarge the pictures but the quality is poor and still does not show the pimpling and heavy polish lines. In fact when I looked at this coin with a wide angle normal magnifier The surfaces appeared normal but when I used my 5x loupe it was easy to spot all the imperfections.

Even the enlarged pictures fail to due the imperfections justice. You can see some evidence of the die polish lines on the reverse between Trade and Dollar, but up close this looks like the counterfeiter used rough grit sandpaper to polish the pimples from his spark erosion die radially around the obverse and reverse yet still missed a great deal of them in the fields. I hope to be able to provide better quality photographs for future posts.
