I inherited this coin recently and am trying to determine whether it is authentic and, if so, the potential value. It is slightly larger than a Morgan dollar and I'd estimate about the same weight. Any help would be appreciated.

Some people may be able to look at a coin and say whether it is fake, I don't have that expertise.

But to say whether a coin is likely real it would be good to know: 1) Is the coin strongly attracted to a magnet? 2) What is the weight in grams?

Yes, I've tried to verify it visually and though the images look correct compared to others I'm unsure of the edge. I don't have a scale or magnet, but will try to find a place to weigh it. Thanks for the advice.

Still trying to determine if this coin is authentic and I've been able to learn a little more. It measures 39mm and weighs approx. 27g. I believe it has the correct edge markings: an alternating pattern with a short overlap on opposing sides. Assuming the coin is actually authentic, is it worth the expense of having it graded?

Coin looks genuine.

However, there are many genuine looking silver copies made in several countries prior to 1935.

The best way to rule out a silver counterfeit is to confirm that the Specific Gravity is 10.31 and an XRF test looking for gold. In 1798 Mexico did not remove all of the gold trace found in silver. They faced an economic limit to purity that resulted in very significant traces of gold remaining in the coin. I consider an XRF test showing less than 400 PPM gold to be a positive indication that the coin was not made in Mexico before 1880.

You can usually find an adequate XRF tester in jewelry shops that buy scrap gold and silver or in some junk yards. The test should cost about $5.

Grading is subjective - no TPG routinely uses XRF to confirm originality. I own many counterfeit 8R's in TPG holders of all types. Personally I think it is not worth the cost.

BarCoin, You are probably aware of this by now but just in case you are not I figured I would tell you that this is a Pillar Dollar, commonly known as A Piece of Eight or 8 Reales. Your coin bears the Mexico City mint mark ( O above the M). The inscription translates into Charles the Fourth, By Grace of God on the obverse and the reverse translates into King of Spain and the Indies. Interesting historic period indeed. As mentioned these coins were heavily counterfeited not only in more modern times but during the colonial period as well. You coin has very strong details and is free from the normal chopmarks that most used in commerce have. I certainly hope you can verify its authenticity. If Genuine this is in very nice shape.
