Pre-2000 Steel Canadian Dime And Quarter (Possible Error Or Pattern)

Searching through my collection of Canadian coins, I came across not one but two unusual pieces - two steel Canadian coins dating from before 2000 (the year Canada switched to making steel coins). The dime is from 1996, while the quarter is from 1981. Like I said, what is strange is that while Canada switched to making coins primarily from steel in 2000, both of these coins are from before that time. I could tell both coins were steel as they were noticeably lighter and both coins stuck to a magnet (the latter in the pictures). Neither of the coins appear to be counterfeit or altered, so I am wondering if these coins could be error coins or patterns. I am also wondering if anyone else has come across steel Canadian coins from before 2000. Any help or information is appreciated, thanks. Report this Post to the Staff

Those years the composition of the metal use for strike was Ni nickel at 100% which it is the second stronger magnetic metal on earth., behind the iron and before the cobalt. Sorry.
