I have been searching for the correct term for this variety of coin. It has two raised " Cuds" on the top of the shield. I have read statements to the contrary that Cuds only appear on the rim of the coin. I have also seen similar coins on ebay described as Cuds on shield.

I provided two images for each " Cud", one dark and one lighter. It might be a little difficult to determine with my current picture set up but they are raised when use the stereoscope.

Those are not Cud's, they are die chips which are fairly common in
that area on shield cents

Hi Mrdrae. Check out (Cud's-on-coins) to get familiar with Cud's.
What you have there are Die chips.

Well, what do you know? Either someone on ebay is misleading folks or they are not familiar with the correct terminology.

to the CCF!

this is a die chip. A small area on the reverse die has fractured and dropped out of the die.

A Cud is an area on the edge of the die that breaks off. This usually leaves a blob like shape on the edge of the coin that stands well above the field and may involve loss of parts of the coins design. It also can leave a weak area on the other side just opposite of the Cud.

Edited for clarity.
