This is the second time this coin has appeared here. the first time was part of a trio of coins I bought at a show. At the time I was very unhappy with the quality of the picture and the assigned grades kind of reflected this. The Pictures are now much more like reality though they seem better viewed for a slight distance. I am slowly improving my Photography skills but I suspect I am approaching the limit of what is achievable on a moving ship.

Anyway feel free to assign a grade and or a value to this coin.
Its not your run of the mill 1864.

I would ask that you take a moment to explain your thinking if possible to aid others who might not be familiar with this series and its varieties.

Anyway on to the coin. And merry Christmas to all.

I'm not at all familiar with this series but do have several wood grained UNC IHC and LWC. These coins exhibit a tendency to cloak some of the definition that may actually be present. I also suspect that while being pressed the rate of metal flow may not be as fluid as a purer copper planchet, thus resulting in the appearance of smoothed defining lines. This can be mistaken as wear or at least take on that appearance thus causing a lower grade in the eye of the viewer.

That said, this is a beauty! I see only two minor issues. There is a hit on the arrowhead at 2 o'clock and it seems to have very light case of verdigris(irridescant blue traces). The wreath is gorgeous!

I don't know how verdigris will affect the grading of this coin but I would feel comfortable paying MS63/64 money for it. Somewhere in the $250 to $350 range, based on this being a large motto.

Merry Christmas,,,,,,,nlp

Nice Coin!!

Educated guess, isn't that wood grain effect from a Split Planchet?

Figman, I believe it is attributed to a poor alloy mix. Fewer examples exist today in modern coinage as the state of the metalurgic art has progressed. Frankly, I wish they would have left well enough alone. Kinda gives the coin character IMO. nlp

I am still torn between a very nice AU-58 and A real nice MS coin. I can see a few light spots on the left side main leaf, the upper part of the left side of the shield and the bow on the reverse. It is hard to tell if it is signs of wear or just the angle of the lighting. It is a super coin though!

Beauty! Love the wood grain effect!

I'd go MS64RB from the pics. Gotta be a $250 coin.

Yes, and it's issue "split Planchet"

I have a 1946- S Wheat, that is split planchet.

Is your coin very thin and light? On a split planchet coin, it broke in half literally. A rare occurance, while wood grain toning is common.

You're mis-understanding is that very few wood grain coins actually split in half. Your comment that the 2 cent piece is a split planchet is incorrect.

I can't point you to a definitive reference although you could get some more info & pictures of wood grain coins if you search the forums. There are several people here that have posted about them, including at least one "wanted to buy" post that generated a pretty good response.

I cannot quite decide between AU58 and MS64/5. There might be a touch of wear on the arrow heads and the middle left leaf but it could also be a bit of strike weakness. The fact that I see no noticable wear on the reverse and the rich woodgrain toning leads me to believe that it is probably solid MS. With that said, the eye appeal is off the charts and it should be worth quite a bit more than an average coin of the same grade.

I am not sure if I am seeing things in the woodgrain toning but is this a RPD or MPD?

Yep its a RPD In hand it looks even better... I wish I could do a better job with my camera. This was not my most expensive purchase of 2008 by a long way but it is by far my favorite. I am toying with the idea of seeing what PCGS would make of it. Will be setting up my QX5 today I hope so I will post some close ups of the areas mentioned.. Band width limitations allowing...

Some QX close ups. Showing AMERICA mainly which does not seem to have elicited much comment other than weak strike.
