Trying to work on my grading skills so I have a question.

You walk up to a dealer table, grab an older wheatie and start the grading process yourself. What are your tell tell signs that instantly get you in a certain grade range? I am definitely having trouble with the VF range.

So hopefully you can share some of your tips and tricks to help make my first assumption on grades a bit faster and less confusing ;) I just went through some of my older wheats and picked out what I thought were AG through AU58, 9 different coins/grades total. What helps you differentiate your grades! Thanks for the help

Also, you can get a Photograde guide to give you an idea visually. Grading takes time and over time, your grading skills will improve. VF and AU obviously have the largest spread of the circulated grades.

Yeah, I've seen all the grade criteria, I'm just curious to what other people look for right away.

So I might look at a coin and say "well its not XF because..."

VF coins should have separation between the jaw and cheekbone. If the cheekbone is worn flat into the jaw, it's not VF unless there is a major die or planchet problem.

An EF coin will have full, but worn wheat lines on the reverse. Each line must be fully visible and complete. If the lines are incomplete and show some rubs, it drops to VF. Within the VF range, 20-35, I use a percentage of lines showing to determine the final grade.

Hope that helps!

Yes, that is correct too. When you can see separation between the cheek and jaw, the coin moves into the VF range. Then you have to use the wheatlines to narrow the grade down.
