Hi everyone, I'm very new to coins and that, I probably won't be using the correct lingo, so apologies. Anyway, I had a birthday recently and for it, I got given an antique coin, with the specifications noted in the title. As it was a birthday present though I don't have much of an idea of the price, I know it was off of ebay, however, the information tab from what I saw said nothing about a crack. The crack does seem slight and runs from the very edge, which travels inwards about 3 mm or so, and then kind of snakes round for another couple of mm. Essentially I just want to know, did my dad (the one who bought it), get ripped off, and should I be looking for a refund or replacement? It's just that I've read online cracks are pretty common in ancient/medieval silver coins due to the age and the material. Is it just a luck of the draw-type thing that's to be expected when buying online, or should I be annoyed about this? Thanks in advance, J

Welcome! Perhaps more properly called a "penny" than "denier"? Quote: Essentially I just want to know, did my dad (the one who bought it), get ripped off, and should I be looking for a refund or replacement? I'm not sure anybody could give a reasonable answer without knowing what he paid. If it were me, I'd probably consider asking the seller if he or she had others available of similar grade, but sans crack, for a swap-out. On the other hand, assuming the crack is stable, it's still a good looking coin and is a neat pickup. A nice birthday gift.

to the community Cracks on these type of coins are common I wouldn't worry about it. I've often seen them folded over. Also at that time the penny was the only type struck, to make small change they were cut in half and quarters to make half pence and farthings. Nice coin.

Thank you for the replies so far (god this is how inept I am with the site, I don't even know how to respond to individuals posts haha). Bob L- yeah I definitely get your point about depending on the money. I guess there's a chance to get a relatively nice, non faded (idk, is that terminology used?) face, without being very expensive, the catch would be other impurities, like cracks. However I don't think I'll ask him, and I guess the fact I'm willing to forego the chance of a 'better' coin to spare his feelings, probably means I'm happy with it the way it is. Also thanks for the correction about the denier, like I said, I'm a complete noob & (glad that I've learnt something though!). Thank you again mate for the honest response & echizento- thank you too for the helpful reply, and also the welcome. Seems like a nice, knowledgeable bunch of people here. Yeah thinking on it, I don't reckon I will change it, probably more trouble than it's worth, and (as long as it doesn't fall apart on me), it's grown on me. Interesting about the cutting up of the coins though, I suppose that just goes to show for medieval people's, things like a slight crack in the coin wouldn't have bothered them one bit! Cheers again, all!
