Greetings Fam... I am new here so the first order of business should be a quick introduction. Like many people, I have always had few coins stashed away that I knew little about.... certainly not a collector by any stretch of the imagination. I recently took up metal detecting and have been fortunate enough to have found quite a few early American coins here in the heart of New England. Over the past year, I have become pretty good at identifying features on old coppers well enough to make a positive ID. A recent find however, has me stumped.
(In the interest of full disclosure, I did post this on a hobby forum so I apologize to anyone who is seeing this twice). I found this particular copper on a site where I have found a number of colonial half pennies (KGIIs, WilliamIII, Woods Hibernia) and an early Spade Guinea gaming token along with other 18th century relics but nothing from the 19th century. It has a diameter of 22.27mm although it is not perfectly round, and it weighs 4.3 grams. There are details on one side that appear to me to resemble a crown or a headdress. The other side has few if any discernible features except for a pronounced off center strike and rim.
I have spent hours online scrolling through images of copper coin/ tokens and have several new books in transit. While I wait for the books to arrive, I thought I would see if a more seasoned eye might be able to see something I have missed.
Thanks for looking HD
