Just picked this up coin hunting down here in Nicaragua. I don't know where the coin made its way from, as this was from an estate.

Unsure if it is a fake.

It weighed .2g shy of the mint weight, which seems fair considering the age (if it is real).

Would be curious of your opinions and feedback.

Regards,

Bruno

@bruno, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you confirm that this piece isn't attracted to a magnet?

Heya Spence,

Thanks for the reply! Good to meet you.

It is not attracted to a magnet.

I did a ping test as well, though I'm not certain of the results of the test. It didn't thud and it did have a clear ring to it. I made a short video of the ping test, but it was too big to post here.

I've scrutinized the lettering under my magnifying glass (5X) and compared it with other photos of supposedly legitimate versions of the same coin, and it holds up well. Nothing jumped out at me except for a few of the serifs which seemed more worn than corrupt. That being said, I'm far, far from being any kind of expert on this kind of thing.

I've seen one other thread about such a coin and they determined it was fake by the date numerals and the edging.

Thanks Spence!

I performed a specific gravity test on this coin and got a reading of 9.925

I did a specific gravity test on a Walking Liberty half dollar, which is 90% silver as well, and got a 10.0

So, perhaps it is legit after all?

The coin does have some characteristics of a casting and not hits from circulation. Hard to tell for sure from these photos if it is genuine.
