I'm not sure what to think about this coin so I thought I'd bring it here. I really, really want to take a polishing cloth to it but I know that's a big no-no!

Guessing this is just environmental toning. Leave it alone.

So it's normal for it to look, well, like a copper cent?

Are you able to weigh it? Looks to have a number of surface and/or strike issues as well, potential counterfeit?

There are some counterfeit copper barbers out there: https://www.NGCcoin.in/news/article...n-july-2019/

Well mint spec was 2.5 grams so I think that the frog was right that your coin is showing toning from environmental or chemical exposure.

That's so weird! While my experience isn't extensive, I've never seen silver look this. Does the toning affect the value?

@gbgh, I'd say in general the answer is no, although there certainly are some folks who will pay a premium for an attractively toned coin. I'm not sure what type of soil conditions might produce this type of brown toning on a silver coin.

Does it ring like silver when you drop it?

My color perception isn't great but here're a PCGS graded 1908 from their website that looks to have a copper-ish tone to it. Possibly there were some planchets struck that had the wrong ratio of copper/silver alloy?
