Beyond having higher detail, proofs will also have different surface characteristics than regular business strike coins. During this time period, most proofs are what's called "brilliant". That means that all of the surfaces are highly reflective, almost mirror-like. Some will have a "cameo" appearance where the design elements appear frosted in contrast to a mirror-like background, or fields. Business strike coins will generally have an even satin appearance.
