How do you tel the difference between a 1998-S silver vs clad? I don't collect a lot of these but trying to discern.
Thanks

Also, the edge of clad US coins have a layer of copper, while silver coins are solid gray on the edge!

Correct, the 40% silver coins are still clad coins. The core blends in better than pure copper, but can still often be seen.

Thanks all. After "the price" I guess the real answer is in the weight. Hard to judge if buying via the internet. But still useful and accurate info. Thanks

The edge technique is great for 90+% silver coins.

The discussion about 40% silver coins isn't relevant here.

The OP asked about a 1998-S Kennedy half. That coin only came as a CuNi clad coin or a 90% silver coin - no 40% coins were made. The edge should distinguish between the two available options in just about every case.
