Those coins from the German Empire (Deutsches Reich) are Ag 625 for the 2 RM coins and Ag 900 for the 5 RM pieces. The 5 DM coins from today's Germany (Federal Republic) were Ag 625; minted between 1951 and 1974. Most of those 5 DM silver pieces are affordable; the more expensive ones in that series are 1958F (about €600 in AU) and 1958J (about €800 even in VF) ...

I do like the 'old' German 5DM design; I find the 'new' design a bit simplistic and dull. As Christian said a lot of those issues are quite affordable and can be had for a little over Bullion value for modest grades...

The later Cu-Ni (Magnimat) 5 DM coin, minted for circulation between the mid-70s and mid-90s, was intentionally more "modern" than its silver predecessor. Unfortunately the original design was modified; the artist wanted the raised edge to have a variable width, but that was not done due to technical reasons. The Jaeger catalog has pictures of the actual coin on p. 456 and of Doehm's design on p. 459. Those who don't have the Jaeger, but would still like to see the difference, should try this link: http://books.google.com/books?id=vW...=3&ct=result
