Hi,

I would like to receive comments from members on this well circulated 1997 Australia $2 coin.

At first glance I thought the deformation was caused by cut to the side of the coin (during circulation).

However when look closer, I noticed the rim of the front & back are there so it is not likely caused by cut.

Also part of the front rim looks like overlaying on the word "1997".

What caused these deforms ? Thanks.

The coin took a hit that displaced some metal. Whenever you see evidence of metal moved from one place to another, you're looking at damage.

Definitely post-mint damage, and we could speculate endlessly on how it happened.

As noted, it is just damage of some sort.
There is no way that could happen during the striking of the coin.

Hi Numisma & Coinfrog & JimmyD,

Thanks for your help and quick replies.

I also believe it is post-mint damage during circulation as such error (if it was) should have been easily picked up (and disposed as waste) by The Royal Mint, even not that should be discovered at the very early circulation stage.

My query is that the surface around the three indented sides are flat. When the metal being displaced by hit / impact, I thought the surface will pop up at least a little bit.

A few hits with a hammer at different angles would do the trick. I've seen a lot worse that still pass the coin counting machines.
