I feel are between me collecting coins and my wife collection gemstones, I need a safe for the home. I believe something the size of 4 cubic feet. Other than that what else should I consider? Does anyone have a safe? If so please share your experience, like price, brand and where you got it.
Thanks,
Tom

I got a 24 gun safe from Bass Pro Shops for around $500. It's big enough for everything I want to put in it and then some....plus it has some fire protection...something like 2-3 hours at 1,200 degrees.

put it behind dry-wall, patch it up and re-paint.

If he buried it behind a wall he'd never get to look at his coins or gems.....You're one of those Tinfoil hat guys arent you?

Keep in mind that you can never be to safe! The gun safes are nice and roomy but make sure you do not get a cheap one and also pay attention to the bottom of them some are not reinforced or insulated the same as the other sides. I have seen some real nice expensive gun safes with less than an 1/8" thick steel bottom, that could be tipped and opened like a can. I am currently using an old very big and heavy bank safe with that is hard to access and well designed. I have another old bank safe that was not as well designed and the dial mechanism came apart on the inside and I had to break into the safe. I was able to get in it with a hammer a punch and a pair of vise grips in less than three minutes being careful not to damage anything. I am no longer using that safe! They are all designed different. Check Craigslist for used ones there are some great deals and some crazy intricate very secure safes you can buy. Just be careful who you buy from. Like Coinage said try to hide it that way you increase the number of lines of defense at your disposal.

I think I'm just cheap. I'm getting some Silver, you'll need a Chop saw in order to get at it- assuming you know where it's at, which you won't. I'll keep some silver to look at but nothing I would be to worry about if it was lost or stolen. I figure it's a long term investment, so I need long term storage. It might actually be better to have some Silver out so thieves believe they found your stash but in reality they don't have anything substantial. It's the same idea of having $20 bucks in your pocket when getting mugged on the street, just have a little something to throw at the crooks so you can get away and they won't chase you down. There could be a lot of different ways to hide your stuff, you're only limited to your imagination. I thought of melting my own silver and casting it into something, like a flower pot and spray paint it black, and have a plant in it. Haha! A TON of different things you can do.

COINAGE...Actually,your idea isn't as bad as some ive seen on the gold and silver forums (youve probably seen them tooo)...these guys actually jackhammer a hole in their basement floor, put the safe in and then cover it with cement...that way nobody can get their treasures including them!

twjcpj.....If your worried about fire damage, then,I think the safe you decribed would do well....But,if someone knows you have a valuable collection and really really wants to take it,then theyll just force you to open the safe for them!....the best protection against someone stealing your stuff is to not let anyone know you have it...or a safety deposit box!!

But seriously, vaults covered in cement? That's out of my league, those guys must have a Million in gold.

Or just wear your wife's gem stones like a rapper. It will be fashionable and be with you at all times. But you better get a gun.

Did you read about the guy that had booby traps all over his home and ended up killing himself? The police stopped investigating the home and decided it was safer to just demolish it. Learn from that guys mistake, I wonder what he was hiding?

Does that bother you Elimist? I didn't think this was a competition to see how many posts a person can make. You're still ahead of me, you can sleep better tonight.

I have had good luck purchasing safes of differing sizes from Craig's List.
I just search for local safes
Last one I bought was a 17 cu ft for $100!
