Question For Set Collectors Of Classic US Coinage (Set Grading Standards)

Possibly Peace dollars every year and mintmark, not including the various die varieties. The seemingly small issue is that I'm unsure if wether or not I should be aiming for a consistent MS64 grade across the board or say aim for a MS set. Whats you're set building strategy and how do some of you approach set building with higher grade coins? Report this Post to the Staff

I was actually originally planning on sticking with MS 64 as the overall grade and as close to blast white untoned as possible with no spots. darn I do sound picky. Report this Post to the Staff

Last I checked the most expensive coin in MS 64 is around $6k if I'm not mistaken. I think I can build the entire set in MS 64 for around $15k with some patience. Report this Post to the Staff

John1 I respectfully disagree (but this is a subjective issue). While you should buy the key date(s) in the grade you're comfortable affording with the eye appeal you want, why handcuff yourself to lower grades on the other dates? I like the eye appeal you're seeking, but dates like 1923 and 1925 are affordable in MS66 or 66+. Those can be blast white luster bombs, and also free of the distracting marks on the cheek and fields that will be present on MS64's. Buy beautiful coins that you can afford, even if the grades vary! TBH I just havent bought too much due to the fact that so many coins on ebay are just lacking in the eye appeal department. I would prefer luster and strong strike in return for some marks but uneven toning and spotting is a no no for me. So you can imagine that I have literally looked at hundreds of coins from this series in MS 64 or better and very very few of these coins meet my criteria. Perfect looking coin with some carbon spotting nope, no carbon spots but yellow uneven toning nope, etc etc. You get the picture. I might have to start branching out and looking at dealers who are selling through their websites. Report this Post to the Staff

You can also use for free collectorscorner.com, where hundreds of dealers post their inventories and prices, and you can use the filters to drill down to what you want (but there is no filter for eye appeal).
