That's a very interesting shape! A "heart cob"? I hope it's real. I don't know about Spanish colonials...I hope someone can help.

Me? I don't collect these, so I cannot say from looking. I just liked it, that's all. It's a very specialized coin, but some collectors here probably know more. If "735" on the coin is silver content, then specific gravity could be checked. The SG would be 10.41--if I could test that for you, I would. Wait for someone to help you from your photo.

Thses cobs are amongs the most prize and valuable coins of Spanish American collection. Nicely and neatly cut makes it questionable. The coin itself looks questionable but then I could be wrong. If it is fake it is a nice class A coin to have. This is a 4 real authentic This is an authentic 8 real Check this link: http://www.sedwickcoins.com/article...lcoinage.htm

MG, that's a very interesting site! I saw a few heart cobs elsewhere and noticed they all are holed--possibly to wear?

DagonX, IMHO the coin you have appears to be a fake. Every heart shaped 8 reales I have seen appeared to be struck from very high quality (i.e. "new") dies and had very sharp details. Your coin in the photo, which may look different in real life, appears mushy and almost cast like. Also I have never seen a Potosi 8 from that time period (1737) with a cross side that looked that crude with the lions so out of scale compared to the castles. Also Kurt S, yes most hearts are holed and were worn as jewelry.

jfransch, as I said - I know nothing about these coins But I think that I'll go with this coin to some specialist. And I'm sure that I saw somewhere 1 and 4 reales from Bolivia with this date But thanks a lot for yours suggestions

The coins you saw could be of the same fabrication?

There are coins with that date, just not with that "odd looking reverse". 1737 isn't that scare of a date. But I stand by opinion that the coin is a fake, it just doesn't have the correct look or style to the cross side. Too bad too, a nice "heart" 8 reales is a big $$ coin in high demand.

It is not only the cross, it is the whole coin that is questionable and looks chinese.

DagonX. I have collected 8 reales for 30 years, but I also ask certain people their opinion on coins that I find questionable. In this case I decided to save you some work and forwarded the picture on to Dan Sedwick, (his website is http://sedwickcoins.com), who along with his father wrote "The Practical Book of Cobs" which is one of the standard reference books for identifying cob coins. Here is his response email "Of course it is fake, details incorrect, cut wrong, etc. Looks like the stuff that has been coming out of Peru lately, although I don't think I have seen this specific one before. Dan " Just wanted to pass on the information. Still an interesting fake and a great coin to have in your collection.
