So, I've had this quarter for a while, and I've always thought of it as a struck thru grease/grit. By happenstance, I showed it to coin dealer while trying to illustrate/explain a defect on a west point quarter. He called the coin pictured below "significant" and that it had likely been hit by a die cap. He also claimed to be a former ANACs grader. What do you think? Is this a strike thru or something else?
In terms of a close up, this is the best I can do right now. The dealer had also said the circular nature of the copper coloring in the center of the coin, and around the rim, was an indication the die cap was involved. Obvious I have no idea...
Well it was struck through some oil on the die, thus preventing the nice BU finish from happening. Sometimes you have some grit in the mixture that alters the surface and sometimes a drink, perhaps water? But on the dies, it will prevent a nice strike that we usually like to see. This one is not a premium coin. More of a spender.
