Just entering my new 2021 Alphabet Coins into the catalogue. Have to admit, not impressed. The design and choice of subject on many seems a bit wanting. And what's with the font 4 on the text. I may be getting old but my short vision is not that bad yet I still find myself squinting to read the text. Also, when will Coaster be starting his new thread! I'm already looking forward to it.

I agree with you on the subject being left wanting. Very basic really, but then the first set wasn't any better.

I also find the designs or profiles make the coins look dull. At least in the first set the subject matter popped. The iced vovos, meat pies etc stood out at first glance. For most of the coins in the second set the subject is not obvious at first glance. Is the profile lower? Wonder if others get the same impression.

Can't seem to get excited about collecting Series 2. Like a good TV series - the first one is the best - then they flog the idea to death.

Interesting that the new owners of my local APO have purchased the tubes for sale as is. The impression I got was that they won't be issuing them as loose change. If that's the case, then they too seem to think they will only be bought by collectors and people won't be hunting through change. Agree, like Hollywood these days, they can't think of anything new. I would have preferred a new series like national parks/geographical features or flora/fauna. Oh well...

already have one but I still reckon it overpriced and over minted might do better or might not.

I have about 60 of Series 1 Alphabet coins. Does anyone need any before I release them into the wild?

My take is they have pretty much abandoned the hunt aspect this time around, the sets wern't widely advertised the first time around, how ever this time pretty much all promotion in store and in the stamp bulletin has been for the set. The individual coins have also been for sale in little cardboard sleeves from the get go (spell your name apparently). Now if I ruled the world what I would do if the purpose is really to get kids involved in the hobby is 1) like the State Quarters model only release five or six a year 2) Not release a mob of roos or any other circulation dollar coins during the release years (how many circulation dollars were there in 2019?) 3) Release a large number of each coin (kids get bored if they don't have relative easy finds) 4) I would make the collector folders a lot cheaper (free if possible) $7 for a bit of cardboard with some plastic inserts is ridiculous even if you reduce the quality (maybe just a punch hole arrangement) if kids have the folder in their hand they will try to fill it, especially if they keep finding the coins in their change. However as with all aspects of the modern world I'm in charge of nothing lol

@karloning - I still need a few - x, y from memory. They seemed scarce in the Sunshine State. Will let you know. @Polarboy - I agree but I think you and I look through the world with rose tinted glasses. RAM (and Aus Post before them) realized some decades ago that they are businesses who's prime function is to turn a profit. Children collecting coins from change don't generate the same profit as cashed up adults buying limited release sets. A quick and better profit can be made selling UNC Alphabet coin sets directly to collectors rather than relying on snotty nosed kids rummaging through change (who probably won't become serious collectors anyway and thus a poor investment in time and resources). Can't really blame them as after all, coinage is in terminal decline and at the end of the day, only collectors will want coins as there will be no need for coins in monetary transactions. The mints must adapt to their market or become a relic of the past. I suspect it will only take a decade or two before we wave goodbye to coins minted for circulation.

I have 5 letters from the current series, to date so far. I only get them from pocket change, so as a result, will most probably will fail to complete the set.
I have 22 out of 26 of the previous series, will most probably will not get any more from pocket change. I have so far successfully resisted from buying the missing coins from a dealer, or at coin shows.
I think both series a bit trifling and childish, but then again, I am happy to collect them as a kid would. At least, I can put them back into circulation for no loss in face value, but I would rather give them away to another kid as a start into serious coin collecting. And I have had some kids fun along the way.
