Hi all,

I recently found this coin in a box. I was wondering if you think it's authentic? If so: any ideas on further identification (mint place?)?

Weight: 15.88 grams, diameter: 23mm

Thanks in advance!

Since I'm first to comment, I vote no, it's not authentic.

Why?

1. Soapy, soft appearance.
2. Round. Most people expect coins to be round, so forgers created round fakes. Ancient coins are rarely round.
3. Metal is off. Looks like a faked patina on a base metal, not tarnishing on a silver coin.
4. Appears to be a casting seam on the bottom edge.

Let's see what the experts say.

I know nothing of these, but it somehow just doesn't look all that old.

More than enough of the edge is visible to show the seam where the two halves of a mold were joined together
Most likely to make the wax copy used in the cast
The area behind the Eagle looks like the point where the sprue was attached and filed away
Nice looking knick knack though
