I dearly love searching half dollar rolls but for the last 2 years the banks I try haven't had any. Is it just my area (south Fl) or is it a general problem ? I may have to start searching cents or nickels.

$500 box is the way to go. Just make sure you have another bank to deposit the ones you don't want to keep or when the time comes to order another box they may give you the runaround. Spending them in circulation is always fun too. Esp when you get a younger person clerk who prob has never seen a Halve. You might generate an interest and create another collector!

This brings up an interesting question related to the quest for half dollar rolls. (I too went to three bank branches yesterday and got 1...not roll, 1 half dollar!). Anyway, where do banks "order" haves from? i.e. do branches obtain from the main bank. Main bank from the Treasury or the Mint? Is the Federal Reserve in on this at any point?
In my town we have a Federal Reserve Branch. Do they have money? Can I walk in and ask for Half Dollar rolls?
I know for a fact that they shred paper money. You should see the weaponry they use to guard the trucks coming and going!

I can very RARELY get half rolls. I ask everytime I go to any bank, 99% of the time they have NONE. Banks and people in general do not like half dollar coins. There's no spot in their drawers for them, they see them as a hassel.

No halves again today so I went with 20 rolls of cents to try my luck. Nothing rare. I got 1 Canadian and 15 Wheats in my 1000 cents, still it was roll searching. Still longing for half rolls. I'll have to scrape up the $500 (if I can) and order them that way. I'm a low budget player so I hate to go that route but "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do."

I went into my bank last week, and asked for Half Dollars.
Even though it's a good sized bank, they had only 10.
No silver. Nothing special.

My bank orders a box each week for me. But I am told it is because of my business account that they do this. My bank gets their coins from brinks (not the fed) and is charged a fee when they order boxes or send back bags of coins. That is why alot of banks don't like to do this for us. It cost them money.

I think that might be true with me too. I have my business account there, my personal savings account, and my personal checking account. So, the way I see it.....they charge me monthly fees to "handle my money" and so I charge them an occasional fee to order a box of halves for me.....they still walk out ahead of the game in the end !! The sad result, however, is that after a few thousand dollars worth of halves and coming up with NO SILVER and NO PROOFS and NO NIFC's.........I'm in NO HURRY TO ORDER ANY MORE !....

Guess I have the very same problem. Did get $8 worth friday, but only went to two banks(same bank 2 branches). I haven't asked them to order some for me. It really is kind of frustrating that you can't get a coin that's supposed to be in circulation.

Ask politely and keep asking. Eventually some will end up in the tellers drawer and they'll be eager to get rid of them.
Just before Christmas a friendly teller called me to her window. I have some halves she said, $12.50 worth. I took them expecting nothing but clad but found one silver. Well worth it.
I handed out the clads to the kids for Christmas.
