As the die was weakening from the master hub was swelling, to strengthen the design on this area, some of the dies showed alterations to alter this area to make it extend for a few more years on the master hub. Note sure which was altered, Master die, or working die. But this appears on some of the dies created. (but not all of them) This was occurring during this time:

Reverse looks like a die chip. The obverse looks like MD to me but I am not an expert. Still learning here.
