There's this lining on the front of the penny. Any idea what it is or what causes it?

I thought it was a finger print too but I tried to wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and it wouldn't go away.

Fingerprints leave oils from your skin that can etch the surface on your coin, making them numismatically worthless. On a side note, NEVER clean your coins, even with a microfiber cloth.

If the fingerprint isn't very recent, it's not coming off. A soak in acetone would have removed it, if done right after the print was applied.

Skin oils are pH 5.5, neutral is 7, acidic is less than 7, alkali is higher than 7. at 5.5, it's enough if left on the coin surface to etch the fingerprint into the coin.

pH 5.5 is somewhere between coffee and Milk neither of which you'd want to have prolonged contact with your coins.
