It's not a coin. The obverse is in the style of American gold coins of the date indicated, but this clearly isn't gold. It's also been soldered onto something at one stage; likely it was a button or cufflink.

This thread had a similar item; unfortunately, the pic's been deleted. This Thread has a similar, but cruder, piece.

I assume the box, and little circle opposite the box, would be where you'd attach a brooch-style mount if you wanted to turn it into a badge rather than a button.

If that's right, then this piece would have been deliberately made as "imitation coin" jewellery.

I suspect something sat in the square , was fixed at the solder point and rested again where the O shape is directly in line with the square and solder point.Like a pin clasp.


Edited to add oops , shoulda read all the posts more clearly , Sap I think had it spot on.
