not sure what this is called, but it seems like a very light strike followed by a normal strike on the same planchet. the reverse design does appear on the obverse though, but I don't think this is a die clash. the details from the reverse seem to follow the contours of the obverse design. very hard to take pictures of. there is an 'M' on the nose area, an oak leaf and another artifact on the neck, and many letters on the rim of the neck. I can only reliably make out an 'A'...

Just looks like a fairly strong die clash to me. Not seeing any signs of a double strike.

but that wouldn't really explain the nose letters would it?

That's was a deep die clash! It looks like most of the marks may have been polished, but not all. I can see the top of Roosevelt's hair clashed into the reverse, even with the dark picture.

The marks on the nose are the Olive Branch, not letters.

Here's an overlay to help locate all of the clash marks on both sides.

This is a link to a Heavy Clashed Dime that I posted a couple of years ago. http://goccf.com/t/358629 Note that the clash marks are slightly misaligned.

oh, ok. I can kind of see it now. I guess there is a significant offset to the NW of the obverse, although the reverse has a centered clash. guess I still have to do a bit of research on how clashes occur. are these considered to be rare? I have three now, in probably less than 4 months of looking...
