What MS grade is approx the same as a BU grade?

IMHO, BU should be MS-62/63.

UNC should be MS-60/61

However, I don't think anything is written in stone on those grades! And even if it is, I doubt if very many people follow it.

my book lists the 1921d morgan at $33 in MS63, I "was" going to buy one but they want $52 for it

BU is BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED...the most misused term in numismatics. For me, it implies the coin surfaces are completely original, bright and full of mint luster with NO toning or coloration. Any MS coin from MS60 up can be BU, but it MUST have those characteristics or it's just uncirculated.

I see people on ebay using the term BU incorrectly about 90% of the time. There is nothing brilliant about a brown Lincoln or a toned coin.

That's because they no nothing about grading. I have seen the same auctions Thad, it's pretty annoying, especially with those "stock" photos of coins they never took themselves. I skip right over these listings!
