Over the years, I've occasionally picked up a medal that shares a design with one of the classic era commemorative coins - most have had a design similar to either the World's Columbian Exposition half dollar or the Roanoke Colony coin. I thought I'd share a few of these medals here on CCF and am starting off with one I received at the American Numismatic Association ( ANA) Banquet during the 1999 Annual Convention (aka World's Fair of Money). I mounted a couple of exhibits at the Convention and, as a result, received a complimentary ticket to the large Awards Banquet. At the banquet, everyone in attendance received a gift bag that included a sterling silver medal (proof) struck by, and provided with the compliments of, The Franklin Mint. The obverse of the medal features the same "ship on wheels" design of the Columbian half dollar, but with inscriptions appropriate for the setting. The reverse present the "Lamp of Knowledge" and highlight's the ANA's role as an educational organization for the hobby. It is the first medal I added to my collection that features a design closely associated with a design on a US commemorative coin - but it wasn't the last! Forgot I started this thread and promised more! So...Here's another 1992 silver Columbus medal (0.999 fine, one troy ounce); this one features the obverse and reverse designs of the 1892 commemorative half dollar. It was struck during the quincentennial anniversary in proof as well as in uncirculated versions. I have an example of each, and decided to present the proof medal here. I've also seen the design available in a five-ounce format. From a technical standpoint, the medal is very well done IMO - it captures the design of the original well, the medal's die was engraved with precision and is full of fine detail. Also, the medal's strike quality (proof and uncirculated) is of the highest quality. If you wanted just one 1992 medal that makes use of the 1892 design, this one would be my recommendation! I have searched for information on this one to try to learn who struck it, who marketed it, its original selling price, how many of each type were made, etc. So far, my searches have come up empty. If anyone out there recognizes the medal and has any info they can share, I would be very appreciative. 1992 Christopher Columbus 500th Anniversary Silver Medal

Time for another silver round that owes its design to the 1892 World's Columbian Exposition Half Dollar. The 0.999 fine silver round presents the designs of the 1892 half dollar in their original/actual size, encircled by a band of silver that incorporates 500th anniversary (1992) commemorative inscriptions; the outer band of silver brings the overall weight of the piece to one troy ounce. The round is a single piece of struck silver, with an overall diameter of 38mm. As with the preceding silver piece above, my searches for information on this one have not been fruitful. I am still looking to determine its mint/manufacturer, who marketed it, its original selling price, how many were struck, etc. If anyone out there recognizes the silver round/medal and has any info they can share, I would be very appreciative. 1992 Christopher Columbus 500th Anniversary Silver Medal  Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! I have seen those from time to time on various auction sites / ebay. It is a less-elegant rendition that the others shown so far and that gives it a certain charm. I completely forgot about the 1992 Columbus medal that I wanted to add to this thread, but here it is nearly 3 years later!It's a silver medal sponsored by the US Christopher Columbus Quincentennary Jubilee Commission in 1992; it was also available in Bronze and Gold-Plated Silver. Each medal has a diameter of 38.2 mm.
