The scarce and valuable versions of the 1982-D Lincoln Cent are those struck on the traditional bronze planchet (i.e., 95% copper, 5% zinc - in use from 1962). The 1982-D cents struck on the 97.6% zinc and 2.4% copper planchets (i.e., the copper-plated zinc cents), are common and do not carry a numismatic premium. The best way to tell what you have, as others have mentioned, is to weigh the coin. A true bronze cent weighs 3.11 grams while the copper-plated cents are lighter, weighing just 2.5 grams. Of the seven different compositions, only the 1982 d small date was struck exclusively of the new 99.2% zinc plated. Although extremely rare varieties exist.
