What do you think? The surface has a granular look, not sure.

Oh sure thanks guys for leaving up to me to comment about this coin . All I can say is the reverse of this Buffalo nickel is the best and sharpest other than a proof that I.ve ever seen . As far as the obverse , It's a decent strike with a couple of very minor issues . The granule look I have no idea other then foreign substance on a fresh die .

I am guessing:
?Thin, even film of oil on the die?

It is a really nice Buff, anyway.

Looks OK to me. I'll say MS-66.

I think the granulation is due to the quality/editing of the photos. The carpeting below the coin looks similar, probably overly sharpened pics.

As for the Buff, nice example! Better than average for the date, especially that reverse! Obverse shows some typical softness for the date, some weakness in strike noticeable in the hair above the braid. Residual marks left in the hair are planchet marks not removed from strike. Small hit upper portion of the neck, small hit to the cheek. Carbon spot on the feather (no too worrisome but distracting). Bigger concern would be the spot below the jaw on the neck.

A few small hits in the fields below the belly, one on the left hind leg, one below OF.

Depending on how the luster looks in hand, if subdued, in combination with the two spots keeps it out of GEM for me. I'm at MS64, +/- 1/2 point if the spots can be dealt with.

the reverse strike is exceptional. I'm having a difficult time discerning luster. it appears to be all there just not dripping. could it be the photos? possibly. if its all there then I'm at MS66. the obverse weaker strike and what appears to be a couple spotty areas could hold it 65

Great coin, MS-66 and no issues that I can see.
