This has been really bugging me after most of these coins on ebay are listed incorrectly I think. The packaging of these coins states it is a Mintmarked coin which is a raised letter on its own. Yet to me it is a Counterstamped coin which is a letter inside a stamped circle. Here is a couple of examples for comment. This last coin has both , a 'C' mintmark and a 'Bluebell' counterstamp just for comparison. Please help me out here, am I wrong?
The last photos are of a Mintmarked coin in the correct packaging.
Ahhhhhh........ Finally the answer I was looking for. Thank you very much COMMEMS for your time to post this information. I have even asked the RAM about this and was given round about information but you have cleared it up for me. Thanks so much
Have seen I.S. Wright selling pre 2008 $1 coins on ebay with the emphasis on being 'hand struck' by a coin press at one of the Easter Shows. As shown above ,the mintmarks on these coins look like a 'counterstamp' when produced at the Canberra Mint. They could have a 'C,M,S or B' on them although all come from the RAM. My question is how to tell the difference between a coin that has been struck on a coin press at a Show as it has the same mark? Some have suggested that the coin press mark is 'oval' and the RAM mark is 'round'. All coins claiming to be 'handstruck' have a round circle with a letter inside. I am yet to see both coins side by side as a comparison, could somebody help with a photo of both varieties side by side please.
Coins struck on a coin press at the Easter show or popup shows are called counterstamp coins and are a letter or shape(Map) in a circle on the coin. Those coins sold on ebay from I.S. Wright are counterstamp coins and not Mint mark coins. You can tell as counterstamp coins are in circles. Privy mark coins are in squares except the C one is a raised C.
I think there has been some discussion somewhere about how to tell if it was counter-stamped in Canberra or at a show and I think you can tell - the pressure of the Canberra press is different to the portable press from memory.
PCGS have got this coin labeled wrong. Should be 'Mintmarked' . Not 'Counterstamped'. As you can read from past posts above from@ commems https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/404810757315
The earliest mintmark-dollar coins were indeed "mintmarks", in that the Mint took an actual coin press, with regular coin blanks, around the country to the various coin shows and other shows; a "B for Brisbane" coin was actually entirely struck in Brisbane. But shipping an entire coin press all over the country got too expensive, so they started carrying around a counterstamping machine, loaded with pre-struck coins, instead. So a "B for Brisbane" coin was struck in Canberra, but countermarked in Brisbane. It took them several years to change the label on the wrappers from "mintmark" to "counterstamp". The introduction of the "privy marked" coins, which were essentially regular Canberra-struck coins just given a different mark and marketed at the targeted locations, happened at the same time as the official name change of the counterstamped coins from "mintmark" to "counterstamp".

To complicate matters worse from 2004-2007 the Royal Australian Mint minted counter-stamped coins in Canberra but also counter-stamped coins on their mobile presses at coin fairs as well. You can tell the difference by looking very closely - counter-stamped coins from Canberra have very sharp round edges yet the counter-stamped coins from their mobile presses due to less pressure these mobile presses could imapct on coin have weaker strikes hence counter-stamp look shallow and less defined - I have included 2 coins images side -by-side for comparison.

Your valuable time to photograph and post the different types of 'mintmarks' on those coins is very appreciated by me. The 'B' is obviously different compared with each other from the close up shots. Still calling them a 'Mintmark' though as they are pre 2008 . So which one is worth more?
Haven't really followed their price unfortunately You would think the mobile counter-pressed coin should be worth more because it is rarer but in reality I don't think there would be a great difference in price for either coin
