While going through a lot we were purchasing I came across this coin. I thought I'd share as it is much better than most fakes I often see.

How to ID this fake.

The easiest tell to me is the date. The 3 in 1931 is misshapen. On a genuine 31-S the lower loop extends past the upper loop. In addition, the serif in the middle of the 3 is a smooth, round ball on a genuine coin while on this it's jagged and triangular.

Agree, fake. Tip of the lower scoop of the 3 should extend left of the tip of the upper scoop.

Another thing that should make you very suspicious is the grade of the coin. Few 31 S cents grade lower than XF and les than VF is practically unheard of. There coins were known to be a low mintage pretty much from day one and most of them almost immediately disappeared from circulation.
