Hi guys

I recently received a blackend, heater Silver Denarius in a small job lot. As it was not my focus for the lot I decided to see if could improve the coin via cleaning.

I settled on creating a foil cup adding some bicarbonated soda to the bottom for the coin to sit on and a layer of bicarbonate soda on top of the coin to cover it. I then added boil hot water and left the coin fizzing for 30 seconds before removing it and washing it with distilled water. I repeated this provess 3 times to get the results shown below.

I don't normally clean silver ancient coins but in this coins case I figured there wasn't much to loose.

Also if anyone can help confirm the coins identify details that would much appreciated.

Cheers Jay

To be honest it was quite attractive the way it was when you purchased it.

I do like to clean coins, but I do so to remove hard encrustations. In this case, I would have left the coin as is. Essentially, only the patina/toning has been removed. Good thing is that it is silver and toning will eventually return, but I doubt it will be as dark as when you acquired this. If you want to speed up the process, you can boil and egg, mash it up and put the coin in an air tight jar and it will tone up. Try to suspend the coin and do not have it contact the eggs.

Not something I would try on a intact coin.
