Here's one of the limited three-piece sets of 1976 Colorado Centennial / US Bicentennial commemorative medals struck by the US Mint. The medals were sponsored by the Colorado Centennial-Bicentennial Commission and were struck "in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the statehood of Colorado." (Public Law 93-227)

Colorado joined the Union on August 1, 1876 as the 38th state. The State's nickname is "The Centennial State."

The Commission sold the medals in multiple compositions. The set contains an example of the bronze, silver and gold-plated medals - each was also sold individually. The Commission also sold individual solid gold medals, but these were not included in the set; my gold example is stored at the bank, but I'll try to post an image of it when I can - it makes use of the same design as the other medals.

One thousand of these three-piece sets in custom holders were available. My set is Number 955.

Funds from the sale of the medal went to the Commission for its use in helping to fund local celebrations across the state that marked the US Bicentennial and the Colorado Centennial.

A local estate auction house has this archive set up for bid. It is marked as Set number 1193.

Follow up: Was the winning ( only ? ) bid for the set. Less than $25, including buyer's premium and sales tax.

@commems: Thank you for posting the background information.
