I know gold is a soft metal, but 2 scratches on a silver coin gets detailed as graffiti, and a few hairlines on a proof coin details as cleaned. I actually consider this coin as severely damaged, PCGS calls it MS61.....your thoughts?

Probably should have pulled MS60, but technically speaking if all those marks are deemed bag marks (or at the high points- pre strike planchet marks not removed from strike), no signs of broken luster/exhibits full mint luster, no signs of any wear or circulation, then it can be considered MS.

I just wouldn't expect an example like this to bring MS61 money. Not the greatest in the eye appeal department.
Rest in Peace

Not the best photo either, way too much light on the high points.

MS-60 is my guess. Way too baggy even for a 61.

I am curious as to what would make it into a 60 slab these days.

This is a reason why, if I can only afford a MS60 or MS61 example of a gold coin, I'll often go with a AU55 or AU58 instead. I find a heavily bag marked low-MS coin generally unattractive while a high-AU sometimes will have better eye appeal. Just my personal opinion, however...

Centerfire, I agree that this gold coin looks mighty beat up, but take a look at some slabbed MS60/61 Morgan dollars - they tend to be very heavily bag marked, as well. Actual scratches will get you a details grade on any coin, but even heavy bag marks will still pass muster as very low mint state.
