SydneyG New Member United Kingdom 13 Posts	Posted 07/03/2021 7:05 pm Hello folks, I'm new this board, so far only having introduced myself in the Introductions forum (here: http://goccf.com/t/403387 ). I'd be grateful for opinions of the Roman coin shown in the image (I hope it shows okay). The coin size and weight are #8960;~28mm, 22g±0.5g (scales not very accurate!). It's quite thick, I don't have vernier calipers to hand but perhaps 4mm? Various searches of images suggested to be it may be a Galba Sestertius. Then I saw this on ebay, which looks most similar: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284350836541 . but my coin, worth $1,500.00?! Surely you jest.?! Do you think this identification is correct? If I were to put it up for auction in ebay, what would be a good starting price? With thanks for any information you can provide. Sydney. The coin you've linked to is described as a dupondius (half a sestertius) - Roma have one coming up with an estimate of £50 https://www.romanumismatics.com/248...w=lot_detail Yours is heavier (22g vs 13g), which is nearer this sestertius, which hammered for £110 https://www.romanumismatics.com/237...w=lot_detail I think, though, that your obverse legend is SER GALBA IMP CAES AVG TR P, the same as the dupondius. If it's a Galba sestertius, it could be RIC 270, 271 or 290 http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/galba/i.html). I think perhaps RIC 270 (not draped) http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.1(2).gal.270. My initial thoughts on this was it was too worn to fetch great value. Also, in the UK at least, just being Roman does to immediately make it super-special. Now, given this additional information from these postings I think I may set it off on ebay with a minimal starting bid and let the market determine fair value. When I do list it, would it be appropriate to put a link to it in this forum on somewhere else on this board? Thank you again everybody, great to have found this source of opinions and information! FVRIVS RVFVS Pillar of the Community United States 3433 Posts	Posted 07/15/2021 2:06 pm If you do sell it on ebay you must be prepared for possible disappointment It could go for 100£ or it might sell for a mere 20£ Sellers with low feedback scores selling a fairly worn (albeit rare !) Roman bronze during the dog days of summer might be lucky to get a reasonable price If I were you I would list it high (150£ ?) with the 'make offer' option for a few months just to test the waters If no one bites then auction it off in the fall Report this Post to the Staff

After some thought, and being in no hurry, I put it up for auction with a start price of £90+p&p to see what would happen.
