Came across this quarter with an indentation on the face.

There is no protrusion in the back side of the coin.

Don't know if it's a mint error or not.

It looks like the coin was in a fire. The dark color on the surfaces would tend to verify this. Heat can also cause the layers to expand and cause "bubbles" under the outer clad layers which couldn't happen during the strike. This is just Post Strike Damage or PSD.

Keep searching and post any coins that you have questions about.

I agree as well. Heat damage, post mint ( PMD). Keep searching, and remember to correctly orient your photos, please.

Just out of curiosity I looked up the melting point for a quarter and this is what I found

Quarters are made of copper and nickel and need a heating point of 2647 degrees Fahrenheit to melt.

Wouldn't the entire quarter be disfigured if it were in a fire and the damage not be constrained to one specific small area?

A typical campfire is said to be able to reach about 1600 degrees Fahrenheit.

Who say will melt at 2647 Fahrenheit? the copper need 1084.62 °C (1985 Fahrenheit) and Nickel 1455 °C (2651 Fahrenheit) and this in melting conditions. At the temperature you give with-out melting additives and kiln conditions will never melt. Sorry it is the physic.

After seeing that video I'm almost certain the quarter with the indentation must be a mint error

This coin was a house fire burned coin. Note the face of George. It was a bubble at one time:

Just a damaged coin. (regardless of how it is altered, it is always a damage coin. It was not struck like that.

Also remember a plumbers torch can direct heat to a specific area and cause the clad layer and copper layer to expand differently.

I have a dime with the same effect on both sides.
