Without a picture it is impossible to give an opinion however by the sounds of your question it may be a gold plated coin. One retailer, Skyline Coins, is notorious for advertising gem BU coins but when you get them they had been gold plated, completely destroying any value it may have had.

There was an Indian Head cent that the US mint inadvertently stamped out using a $2.5 planchet that was a perennial numismatic item with a top dollar asking price on ebay about 5-10 years ago.

Hopefully, you got yourself one of those? ;-)
