I'm working on a US gold coin type set, beginning with the Classic Heads. Wondered what others think of a 1909/1908 St. G as a slightly better date for this coin to add to the collection?

I don't see anything wrong with it. It is a type set not a full date+mm set after all.

Just make sure it is TPG certified due to the large number of fakes.

Did not know that. Is it the 1909/1908 in particular?

It seems to me it is the most of the double eagles. It is like silver dollars. The Chinese will even make counterfeit common date coins just to scam to on the melt/metals value for the coin. I recommend all larger gold coins to be graded by a TPG.
