I am noticing in some of my silver quarters a circular mark on the obversive that often cuts into the top of the head and date. is that a mint error and if so what is it called?

Not an error, just damage from counting/rolling machines

Thank you. Ho hum, I've spent tons of time looking at hundreds of them and thought that was an error. So is there anything that I should keep an eye out for. I have hundreds of 1960 to 1964 Washington quarters and was hoping for more than just melt value.

How large is the circle?
If the circle is close to the edge of the coin, that's like Biokemist said--counting damage.
There is another form of damage that causes a smaller ring in the center of the coin.
I wish I had a pic handy, but I recall that's from a old type of change bank, and some people collect these.

I found an example of what I'm talking about, and here's the post.

That damage in the center from the change bank only comes on dimes as far as I know. I am not aware of a similar type bank for other denominations. (although they might exist, I don't know everything.)
